Patio de Los Naranjos

The Patio de los Naranjos is a part of the mosque of Cordoba. It was built along with the temple in the year 786. The patio was originally built by Abderraman I and used to be small, like a room of prayers. A tower was also built by the north wall, on the outside, according to the Muslim tradition. Later, around the 10th century, the patio was enlarged and the tower as well. The patio used to have a religious function only, though at a certain point in time it was also used for socialization purposes by the Cordobese society. It is a very beautiful and calm place, with water fountains and orange trees. The oranges though are not sweet. They have a sour flavor and can be used to make marmalade.
